The Pentagon suffered through a horrendous event in 2001 that created a permanent memory in the minds of all Americans. On the morning of September 11, Flight 77 was hijacked and sent on its way to Pennsylvania. The plane, loaded with 10,000 gallons of fuel, ran into the west side of the busy Pentagon. In the article it says, “The plane took out light poles in the parking lot and hit the ground just outside the outermost ring of the Pentagon…” (Roberts 1). The 345 mph plane caused great damages to the famous building. The plane took out a big piece from the outside of the West side, and also ruined property and people’s possessions. This devastating event also ended many peoples’ lives on the tragic day of 9/11.
Hijackers on Flight 77 made an unforgettable choice of damaging the Pentagon, and took many peoples’ lives. All fifty eight passengers, four flight attendants, both pilots, and 125 workers at the Pentagon died. Some people were killed quickly from the toxic gas and heat from the plane’s fire while they were in their offices near the crash. In the article it says, “It was estimated that there were close to 2,600 people working in the Pentagon near the impact site. The fact that so many people were able to survive speaks well about the Pentagon” (Roberts 2). Civilians and Military people rushed across and up and down the halls to warn everyone. The fact that the Pentagon is spaced out helped save a great deal of people. Because of this devastating event and its impact on our nation, 9/11 will be a memorable event in our nation’s history.
