The Pentagon Memorial was built to remind everyone of the 184 people who lost their lives on Flight 77 and at the Pentagon. The memorial took about seven years to build and construction was completed on August 1, 2008. The memorial unit, inside the memorial, is a bench made out of stainless steel, which will help prevent damage. Underneath the bench is a pool of water that reflects light in the evenings. The article states, “The idea that this place is just an invitation for your thoughts and your interpretations is what we see as persisting through time, and I think that’s what sets it apart to some extent” (Mount). The memorial is a place where family members of the diseased are more than welcome to visit and spend time in remembering their loved ones. The Pentagon Memorial was created to be open to anyone who feels distant from their loved one and wants to reconnect.
The Pentagon Memorial was designed to be a lasting sign to honor the victims of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. “Thirty five Crape Myrtles” were planted around the benches, inside the memorial. These trees are not represented to anyone but are expected to grow up to 30 feet to provide shade over the land. The Age Wall “draws the eye” to the memorial for drivers who pass by while on the Washington Boulevard and the Arlington County Bike Path (Mount). The two creators of the Pentagon Memorial, Beckman and Kaseman, put a lot of effort and thought into making the memorial special.
